Welcome to New York State Roads! This website is about the roads and highways of New York state. On this site is an introduction to New York's roads, exit lists of the freeways, articles on specific topics, and links to other sites. This site also has a photo gallery documenting the highways of New York as well as other regions that I have traveled in. You can follow updates for the site by subscribing via RSS or liking the site on Facebook.
New York is a diverse state with a lot of different roads. It stretches from Pennsylvania to New England and Canada and is bordered by Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Rhode Island (in the Long Island Sound; no roads cross this border but a passenger ferry does), Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, Québec, and Ontario. The terrain ranges from New York City to farmland, the Great Lakes, and the Adirondack, Catskill, and Palisades mountain ranges.
Road and bridge construction and maintenace is divided between several agencies: the New York State Department of Transportation, the New York State Thruway Authority, the New York State Bridge Authority, the New York City Mass Transit Authority, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and the New York City Department of Transportation. More minor authorities include the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority, the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority, the Seaway International Bridge Corporation, the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission, the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority, and the Pennsylvania-New York Joint Interstate Bridge Commission. Other agencies that maintain some of the parkways include the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. Some touring routes and parkways are also maintained by the counties and municipalities.
This website was created in 2013 as a blending of my interests in computers as well as roads, maps, and transportation. The pages in the site are hand coded (including the code to generate the photo gallery pages from the database). New York State Roads is currently hosted on IONOS by 1&1 and was previously self-hosted on a Linux server. I am active on both the AARoads Forum and the "roadgeek" Facebook groups.
I also keep track of the roads I've clinched and the counties I've visited. I map out which roads and highways I have traveled on at the Travel Mapping site. The site allows users to keep track of segments of interstate, US and state (for selected states) highways, as well as other roads from both the US and around the world. The roads I have been on can be viewed on my Travel Mapping page. While I don't aim specifically to visit individual counties, I do keep track of which ones I've visited. Statistics can be viewed on my county tracking page. The county tracking site covers the US, Canada, and Mexico.
